Acts 1:1-5

Introduction, address, continuity with the former book, command to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:6-11

Jesus’ Ascension

  • Power from the Holy Spirit to be witnesses of Jesus in Jerusalem, Samaria, Judea, “to the end of the earth”

    • the cloud filling the Tabernacle/Temple

The disciples (more than the 11) gather together for prayer

Acts 1:15-26

Peter says that Judas’ spot among the 12; flashback to Judas’ demise (cf. Matt. 27:3-8);
Scripture, prayer and casting lots

  • In those days – 50 days between Easter and Pentecost (Lev. 23:15-21); 10 days between Ascension and Pentecost
  • Psalm 69:25 ESV May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.
  • Psalm 109:8 ESV May his days be few; may another take his office!
  • Although there is a lot of detail here about Joseph and Matthias, they are never mentioned again
  • The choosing of Matthias is still considered to be the work of Jesus, not of the apostles
  • Why 12? Jesus chose 12. Correspondence with the 12 tribes of Israel.
